Detective Jack Dantzler is summoned to prison by Reverend Eli Whitehouse, convicted twenty-nine years earlier of a double murder. Eli insists he is innocent but offers only a cryptic direction: examine the local obituaries from a particular two-week period. Dantzler reluctantly reopens the case as two new victims are brutally murdered and the unseen killer begins targeting him. A second clue—an allusion to Jesus’s empty tomb—points toward an ice-cold assassin with powerful organized-crime connections, where one mistake could prove fatal.
