Jack Dantzler returns to Artisan for the twenty-fifth anniversary of a tennis tournament he won three times. District Attorney Mackenzie Chapin asks him to investigate a woman’s murder because the local police chief—the son of the town’s most powerful and feared citizen—is hopelessly unfit for the case. A second woman is killed, followed by a young man who dies in police custody. Every trail appears to lead toward the Winfield family, but Dantzler must determine whether the obvious path is the truth or a carefully constructed trap.
