About the book

Shitbag Soldier: A Creative Nonfiction Novel

Raised in Appalachian Kentucky on patriotic stories about military service, a teenage Burton joins the U.S. Army hoping to build a new life. Her assignment in Bavaria seems to promise castles and adventure, but life in her platoon soon takes a darker turn. Facing her sergeant’s abuse of power and control, she must find a way to survive and reclaim her own story. Drawing on Lubrina Burton’s military experience, this creative nonfiction novel examines the distance between the stories we grow up believing and the realities we encounter.
